Hiking in Reno
Get out of the city and explore the mountains! There are heaps of hiking trails around Reno and Lake Tahoe, some more advanced trails and others that are family friendly, especially for younger children. For beginners, we recommend exploring the Oxbow Nature Study Area Trail and the Tom Cooke Trail in West Reno – both are great for families and young hikers. Other great hiking trails in the Truckee Meadows include the Huffaker Park Loop Trail, the Mira Loma Urban Trail, the Whites Creek Trail, and the Galena Creek Trail. Go out and find your favorite hike!
Kayaking the Rapids
If you’d like to increase the adventure and your athletic skills, try kayaking the rapids of the Truckee River. There are kayaking trips and instructors for all levels. And, if you’re already a kayaking pro – there are plenty of difficult rapids to enjoy!
River Rafting in Reno
The Truckee River spans 121 miles, running from Lake Tahoe and crossing into both California and Nevada. The river is perfect for all sorts of water activities like kayaking, paddle boarding, swimming, and rafting. One of the most popular activities is to float down the river on inner tubes or larger rafts. Not exactly the most adventurous activity, but it is certainly relaxing and you can enjoy nature as you float down the river.
Skiing & Winter Fun
During the winter months, Mt. Rose comes alive with skiers. It is only a 25 minute drive from Reno and is a local favorite. The ski resort sits at 8,260 feet and the summit reaches 9,700 feet. And the best part is – there are trails and terrain for all skiing abilities!
